The Sanctity of Human Life (SOHL) ministry at SVDP is a diverse and dynamic group that seeks to promote the issues surrounding the dignity of human life both within our parish and in the Houston area. The SOHL group sponsors and promotes monthly events and prayer vigils to promote the many pro-life issues existing in our area.

SOHL introduces Walking With Women in Need:
St. Vincent de Paul Parish, with the guidance of the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston is participating in the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops nationwide effort, Walking with Moms in Need (WWMIN), a program serving the needs of pregnant women in challenging pregnancies.
The USCCB and our catholic community believe pregnant and parenting women facing such challenges should see the Church as a place where they can find help, and may draw upon its extensive social services dedicated to meeting the needs of people in crisis.
Pro-Life witness has begun to dismantle the abortion industry in the United States. Notably, the Texas Heartbeat Act, currently the most restrictive abortion law in the country, was signed into law in May 2021 and has already withstood numerous legal challenges. Thirteen other states have proposed their own version of Texas’s ban. Four additional states, inspired by Mississippi’s legislation (currently pending before the Supreme Court), are pursuing 15-week bans. The terrible “final solution” of on-demand abortion may, after 49 years of Roe v. Wade, may finally be facing its own termination.
As on-demand abortion is curtailed, the Church must step up our services to these women. As Pope Francis has reminded us, our parishes are called to be “islands of mercy in the midst of a sea of indifference.” Everyone in a parish community should know where to refer a pregnant woman in need. SVDP’s Walking with Moms initiative will allow every parishioner to identify and better communicate the resources for mothers already available in our parish and region. We may then prayerfully discern how we can build upon our existing response to mothers in need.
